THUNDER BAY -- Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for the city, forecasting wind chills near - 40 C overnight Friday and into Saturday morning.
The national service issued the advisory Friday morning, warning of a prolonged period of very cold wind chills with the "bitterly cold Arctic air mass" that is expected to remain in place through the weekend.
"Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter," Environment Canada advised in the warning.
"Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill."
If it's too cold to be outside, it's also too cold for pets to stay outside, Environment Canada added.
Temperatures are forecasted to rebound beginning Monday, with a high of -9 C along with possible periods of snow.
