Diabetes has become an epidemic in this region, which makes raising funds for programs and services so important.

Team diabetes event coordinator Tara Frotten said right now there are 11-million people living in the country with diabetes or pre-diabetes and that number is expected to rise.

The Canadian Diabetes Association estimates that by 2020 one in every four people will be diagnosed with the disease.

These are some of the facts that propelled local firefighter Jon Balabuck and radio host Brent Hawley to take part in a stationary triathlon fundraiser Saturday at Fresh Air Experience.

Throughout the day, the two participants will take part in a two-mile swim, a 112-mile stationed bike ride and a full-marathon on the treadmills for the finish.

Organizers are hoping to raise $20,000 by the end of the day. So far, they’ve closed in on $10,000.

“We are raising funds so we can provide essential programs and services to help people with diabetes live a better and healthier life,” Frotten said.

These services include educational programs and support, research to improve treatments and a special program that sends children with diabetes to a medically supervised summer camp.

“The camp is a fantastic way for kids to learn to develop independence and manage their own disease.”

Donations will be accepted at Fresh Air until 9 p.m. tonight.
