THUNDER BAY -- Brad Hilgers believes the listeners deserve credit for helping Dougall Media win an award based on flood relief efforts.

On Tuesday, three of the company’s radio stations were given the top prize at the Ontario Association of Broadcasters’ Community Service Awards in Toronto for a marathon broadcast last May that brought in more than $300,000 for the disaster relief fund.

Hilgers, program director for 91.5 CKPR and Rock 94 said the company was just looking for a way to help.

The marathon, which was originally intended to raise $10,000, came together quickly after listeners were asking where and how they could donate to flood victims.

“Basically we were kind of the middle man between our listeners and the people who needed the money,” Hilgers said.

“We were very happy as the totals kept rising but I think we were all a little shocked at the end of the day how much money was raised and that’s all thanks to our listeners.

“They did all the work. They donated the money. We just provided them an outlet to get their money to the people who needed it.”

The two stations, along with 103.5 The Thunder broadcast from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Intercity Shopping Centre.

The Community Service Award is given to broadcasters who create a successful public service campaign.
