Firefighters were able to bring a garage fire that forced a family out of their home and damaged nearby buildings under control Friday night.

Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue firefighters responded to a call of a garage fire on McLaughlin Street just before midnight. When the crews arrived, they found the garage in flames and the intense heat from the fire caused the fire to spread to three nearby buildings.

Firefighters say the situation became more dangerous when the fire brought down hydro lines near the garage.

There were no injuries but a family was forced from their home and taken in by the Canadian Red Cross Thunder Bay, firefighters say.

Five pumpers were able to bring the fire under control. The fire severely damaged one building and the garage with moderate damage to the other two buildings, firefighters say.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
