THUNDER BAY -- City officials say they're experiencing hiccups with changes to garbage pick-up operations.
With a truck taken out of service and new route optimization software in place, residents are being warned to expect delays in service.
"Residents are asked to be patient during this transition period," said Jason Scherband, the manager of the city's solid waste and recycling services. "Administration and front-line staff have been working diligently to ensure that all waste is collected in a timely manner."
A source has told tbnewswatch.com garbage collectors are upset at the changes implemented by the city and have started to refuse to take any trash that deviates from the standards set in place by the municipality, dump their loads more frequently and not work through lunches or breaks to speed up the process. They've also been putting in for added overtime, the source said.
However, a Canadian Union of Public Employees representative on Thursday said the union was in discussions with the city over trash collection, and did not want to comment publicly.
Because of the route changes, Scherband said residents are reminded to place garbage and recycling at the curb after 4 p.m. on the day previous to collection, or before 7 a.m. on the day of collection.
