THUNDER BAY -- For the second time in about seven weeks, Thunder Bay Airport on Tuesday welcomed the largest aircraft that's ever landed in the city.
Antonov An-124 touched down early in the afternoon, apparently carrying parts for the Bombardier assembly line.
The aircraft is designed for the transportation of heavy and oversized cargo.
According to the Antonov website, it is "the biggest series heavy lifter in the world."
The An-124 is the same height as a seven-storey building and has a wingspan two-thirds the size of an American football field.
Bombardier has said that each flight costs about $750,000 but saves the company a month on shipping time.
Although the company has not commented on the nature of the cargo, the Toronto Star reported in July that the shipment includes Austrian-manufactured cabs for streetcars being assembled in Thunder Bay for the Toronto Transit Commission.
