A woman who has spent the past two years in prison awaiting trial on a murder charge has been set free.
30-year-old Thea Gliddy was supposed to begin her jury trial Monday on a second-degree murder charge for the death of Randy Cromarty in 2010. But the charges against her were stayed after the Crown reviewed the evidence to see if there was a reasonable prospect of conviction.
Gliddy’s lawyer David Bruzzese said he spoke with her and her family before proceedings on Monday to explain what was happening.
“She’s relieved. She’s out of custody after a very long time and wants to move on with her life,” he said.
Assistant Crown attorney Elaine Burton said the case isn’t completely dead but if more evidence isn’t found, the charges will be dropped in one year. Bruzzese said even though his client is now out of custody, he would have rather seen the two-week trial go ahead.
“I would have preferred if the matter did go ahead before the jury and a verdict rendered because I was so confident it would have been not guilty and that would have ended it,” he said. “As it is now at stayed proceedings it’s still created this kind of a limbo situation for a period of a year.”
Cromarty, 39, was found stabbed to death at the former Inntowner Motel in May 2010.
