The region is currently without an air ambulance helicopter.

Due to a pilot shortage at ORNGE, staff was moved from Thunder Bay to Moosonee on a temporary basis the company says.

“Such a decision is only made after all other scheduling options have been exhausted,” ORNGE spokesman James MacDonald said in an email Tuesday.

MacDonald said the region still has two fixed wing airplanes available in the region. And a helicopter based in Kenora would be available if necessary.

Regular service should be available Wednesday. He attributes the shortage to an industry-wide problem with trying to get pilots access to the Sikorsky S76 helicopter simulator training.

“ORNGE has taken the current staffing issues seriously and is making significant progress to address this situation.  Four new S76 pilots will be added to the provincial roster by early September,” MacDonald said.
