With missing and murdered indigenous women still a hot topic across the country, a group of walkers plans to walk from Mishkeegogamang First Nation to Thunder Bay to help raise awareness of the situation.
Led by Mishkeegogamang First Nation Chief Connie Gray-McKay, the group intends to walk about 50 kilometres a day, stopping first on Saturday in Sioux Lookout.
The walkers want to draw particular attention to missing and murdered indigenous women from Northern Ontario, including Susan Skunk, who disappeared in 1995 after visiting friends in the remote First Nations community.
They also plan to stop in Dinorwic and Kakabeka Falls on their way to Thunder Bay.
“Canada’s history of missing and murdered women has been a hot topic lately, with many calling for the Canadian government to hold an inquiry into one of our country’s best-kept secrets,” Gray McKay said in a release issued on Saturday.
“So far, no inquiry is forthcoming. Walks like these are meant not just to honour those we have lost, but also to raise awareness and help increase pressure on government to take action.”
