THUNDER BAY -- The band council for the Gull Bay First Nation is considering some major changes to their electoral system.
The chief and council are holding a pair of membership meetings on the subject, including one in Thunder Bay Thursday night.
Wilfred King has been chief of Gull Bay for six of the past seven terms, dating back to 2004. He said their current system of two-year terms makes it difficult for the council to focus on long-term projects and they're now looking at moving to four-year terms.
The change would come by switching from the Indian Act process for elections to the new First Nations Elections Act. King said his council supports the change but they want to hear from their members as well.
King said many other First Nations are looking at this change as well. He hopes to have the new system approved and in place before the next Gull Bay election in January of 2017.
