THUNDER BAY, ON, JUNE 3, 2016 - Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay has raised $23,020 so far in their campaign to turn $50,000 into $100,000 by the end of June to help a loving family build the accessible home they deserve. They now have 28 days left to raise $26,980.
Last month the organization announced a unique challenge offered by an anonymous donor through the Thunder Bay Community Foundation. If Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay can raise $50,000 by June 30th, the mystery donor will match it dollar for dollar. As part of the campaign, for every $20 donated, the donor’s name will be entered into a draw for a queen mattress and box spring courtesy of Reid’s Countrywide Home Furnishings.
The money is desperately needed to build the Hrycyshyn family an accessible home for their 14-year-old son who, with severe Cerebral Palsy, requires 24-hour care. Their current home is nearly impossible to navigate in a wheelchair. Rooms and hallways are too narrow, stairs mean he always needs to be carried to his bedroom and even bathing in the small bathroom is almost an insurmountable problem. He loves being with his family of six but with his wheelchair, the kitchen is too small for them to all sit at the dinner table together.
“That’s where a family bonds, all together around the dinner table,” Mom Taisha Hrycyshyn says. “I just want my son to have a safe place with a great quality of life where we can be a family. Our main goal is to have our family together. Knowing that the community is rallying for us to accomplish that goal is beyond words.”
