A manager for the Habitat for Humanity ReStore says they are in desperate need of help in order to knock down a two-storey home before the first snowfall.

Officials with Habitat for Humanity gave the call for help Wednesday by asking volunteers to come and help knock down a old home near Pass Lake. It’s the first time the ReStore has participated in the complete knocking down of a home.

Materials from the building including windows, installation, wood and banisters will be taken and sold at the ReStore instead of ending up at a landfill.

Keith MacMillan, new business development manager for Habitat for Humanity, said he needs 10 people a day to come out and help bring down the building. Any more than that and then there would be too many people to manage, he said.

“If this works then it’s going to bring on more jobs for us,” MacMillan said. “People with a little bit of skills are great but anybody will do. I do training onsite. If I have 10 volunteers a day, then this job will be done quickly and safely. I have until the snow flies to get this done. If I don’t get my volunteers it’s basically going to be me and someone else.”

MacMillan said they are saving a significant amount by taking the materials from the former home instead of going out to purchase it from a retailer.

He said they will be using only hand tools to do the deconstruction. It will take about 45 minutes to drive to the house but MacMillan said he has room to drive about six people.

He added he hoped to have the project started the first week of October.

Those interested in volunteering can contact MacMillan at 346-4884.
