THUNDER BAY -- The Canadian Alliance on Mental Health has recognized Minister of Status of Women Patty Hajdu as the 2016 Champion of Mental Health.

“Mental health is an issue very close to my heart,” Hajdu said in a release issued on Monday. “It is my hope that by accepting this award, it helps shine a light on the importance of providing support to those living with mental illness.

“I recognized that access to these services is a critical issue, especially when it comes to prevention, and that is why it is among the shared health priorities that the government of Canada is currently discussing with provinces and territories.”

The award was a result of years of mental-health advocacy, including her role as executive director of Shelter House and her time on the board of directors for Alpha Court Mental Health Services.

Hajdu will receive the award on May 3 in Ottawa.
