MPP Howard Hampton (NDP, Kenora – Rainy River) questioned the fairness of pension plans for AbitibiBowater workers and retirees at Queens Park Monday.
The NDP member questioned the McGuinty Liberals about the government's recent decision to bail out Nortel's pension plan. Hampton accuses the province of providing $200 million to the underfunded Nortel plan in an effort to win a byelection in the Ottawa area.
Hampton added that 5,000 retirees and 2,500 current workers found out last summer that AbitibiBowater's pension plan was underfunded by about 25 per cent.
