THUNDER BAY -- Officials at the NorWest Community Health Centre are asking the city to set up a crosswalk on Simpson Street.

They say crossing the busy street to get to the health centre is dangerous for their staff as well as their clients. NorWest CEO Wendy Talbot said she has heard many complaints from her staff about having to cross Simpson Street to get to work. The health centre is currently undergoing an expansion and its parking lot is mainly closed as a result.

But Talbot said this has been an ongoing issue for the past 15 years. Now with part of May Street closed for construction, she said traffic is even worse. She's approached the city on numerous occasions.

Talbot is also concerned for her clients. Many are seniors using walkers, or parents with young children.
City engineering manager Kayla Dixon said the city is awaiting new design standards for crosswalks from the province. Once those are delivered, the city is looking at 25 locations around the city for potential crosswalks in 2017.
