THUNDER BAY -- Officials with the Thunder Bay and District Health Unit are offering advice to city residents still dealing with mould in their homes following the May 28 flood.
Barbara Hartman, a flood victim who spoke with tbnewswatch.com and Thunder Bay Television earlier this week, has black mould throughout the basement of the home she rents.
The Health Unit says residents, or in this case, Hartman's landlord, should take action to get rid of the mould before it causes health problems.
Senior public health inspector Abbey Mackie says it's important to first find the source of water penetration and fix the problem.
If the mould is in a smaller area, a detergent and water solution should clear the problem.
But he encourages homeowners to wear safety glasses, a mask and rubber gloves if tackling the job on your own, as it can pose a major risk to your health.
Mackie says it doesn't come as a surprise that homeowners are dealing with mould six months after the flood.
And depending on the amount of mould, it may be necessary to call a licenced mould remediation company as soon as possible.
