Health unit reports 10 new COVID-19 cases

Active cases rise to highest level in over a week as Thunder Bay District Health Unit reports 10 new COVID-19 cases.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported 10 new cases of COVID-19 Friday, with the number of active cases rising slightly to 61, its highest total in over a week.

All 10 of the cases reported Friday involved residents of Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas, and all were deemed a result of close contact.

With eight previous cases declared resolved, the number of active cases rose to 61, its highest level since April 15. The active case count had hit a recent low of 49 on April 19, after declining for more than two consecutive weeks.

The health unit reported no new cases of COVID-19 variants of concern, with 10 cases so far confirmed across the TBDHU.

The number of district residents in hospital with the virus remained the same, at eight. The health unit reported no new deaths Friday.

The health unit had an incidence rate of approximately 33.35 cases per 100,000 people for the past week, well below the province-wide rate, which has gone above 200 in recent days.

The health unit has reported a total of 3,050 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, with 61 active, 2,930 resolved, and 62 deaths in which the virus was a contributing or underlying cause.
