THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported six confirmed cases of COVID-19 Saturday, with the active case count falling to its lowest level in over two weeks.

Of the cases reported Saturday, three were in district communities, two in First Nations, and one involved a Thunder Bay-area individual. All six cases were considered a result of close contact with a previously identified case.

That continues a recent pattern, with an outbreak in Long Lake #58 First Nation, nearly Longlac, accounting for many of the district's cases. Over the past week, the health unit reported 8 cases in the Thunder Bay area, 7 in district communities, and 12 in First Nations in the district.

The health unit also declared 14 cases resolved Saturday, with the active case count falling to 39. That’s the lowest level seen since May 28, when there were 33 active cases.

Saturday also marked a fifth straight day of daily case numbers in the single digits.

The health unit reported one new COVID-19 hospitalization, with a total of six district residents in hospital with the virus. Two of those people were in the Intensive Care Unit.

The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, which serves a large region that stretches beyond the Thunder Bay District, had a total of 13 COVID-positive patients in hospital as of Friday, with four of those in the ICU.
