THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported four new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, with the number of active cases falling slightly to 32.

Of the new cases, one was in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas, one in a district First Nation, and two in district communities.

Two cases were attributed to close contact, one to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, and one had no known exposure.

With six previous cases declared resolved, the active case count fell by two, to 32. That figure has continued a steady downward trend in recent weeks, with daily case counts remaining in single digits since April 30.

The health unit also reported six previously announced cases had screened positive for COVID-19 variants of concern (VOCs). A total of 74 VOC cases have been confirmed in the TBDHU so far.

There were four district residents in hospital with the virus as of Saturday, with one of those people in the Intensive Care Unit.

The TBDHU had an incidence rate of roughly 19.34 cases per 100,000 residents over the past week, comparing to a province-wide incidence rate of 129.3 in the most recent data released by Public Health Ontario.

The health unit has reported a total of 3,165 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Of those, 3,071 were considered resolved and 32 were active, while the virus was a contributing or underlying cause in 62 deaths.
