City of Thunder Bay media release

THUNDER BAY – Following the discovery of an old explosive device that detonated during rock removal last week at the High Street retaining wall replacement work site, the Ministry of Labour has lifted the stop work order and work outside the blast area has resumed.

The area of the blast has been cordoned off as the contractor moves forward implementing the recommendations from demolition expert, Explotech.

“A representative from Explotech visited the site on August 2,” said Mike Vogrig, Project Engineer. “Following that visit, a report was submitted to Manshield Construction and passed along to the City and the Ministry of Labour on August 8.”

The report contains a number of items including background information, possible sources and reasons for the explosion and actionable items moving forward to reduce the risk of a similar event occurring again.
