NIPIGON, Ont. -- Traffic is finally back to normal on the Trans-Canada Highway after a train derailment earlier this week.

Highway 17 was finally opened in both directions early Friday morning after 22 cars on a Canadian Pacific Rail train jumped the tracks around noon on Tuesday.

The derailment resulted in a small leak of propane from two of the cars, though CP officials insisted the environmental damage was minimal and that the cleanup was progressing well.

The highway between Nipigon and Schreiber was completely closed for more than 16 hours immediately following the incident before it was reopened to one lane Wednesday morning.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
