THUNDER BAY -- The death of a man whose body was found on the shoulder of Highway 527 has been confirmed as a homicide.

Ontario Provincial Police, in a release issued Thursday morning, identified the victim body was located on the shoulder of Highway 527 just north of the Highway 11/17 junction as a 21-year-old man from the Greater Toronto area.

OPP Sgt. Mike Golding said in order to protect the integrity of the investigation the victim’s name will not be released at this time.

“[The investigation] is still in the fairly early stages and [police] feel that releasing the name may cause some issues with the actual investigation itself," Golding said.

An investigation is ongoing by the OPP North West Region Crime Unit and OPP Forensic Identification Services under the direction of Detective Inspector Darryl Sigouin of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

A post mortem examination has been completed at the office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service in Toronto. The death has been ruled as a homicide.

Police say further details will be provided only as they become available and as the investigation moves forward.
