WAWA, Ont. -- The TransCanada Highway near Wawa has been re-opened, nearly a week after sections of it were destroyed by heavy rainfall.
Two sections of the Highway 17, one south and one east of Wawa, were washed out following 130 millimetres of rain that fell during a 48-hour period.
The washouts also damaged a car dealership, a motel and several homes, and left many people stranded due to the roads being unpassable.
The highway washout south of Wawa was repaired over the weekend. And the larger washout on Highway 17 East was partially repaired as of Wednesday afternoon, with traffic now open to one lane.
Meanwhile, the Wawa area is about to be hit with another round of bad weather.
The town is in the path of what's left of the Hurricane Sandy. That could mean a mix of snow, ice pellets and freezing rain.
