The OPP are advising people to stay off highways due to weather conditions.
Monday’s winter weather has forced road closures throughout the region. OPP provincial Const. Carol Michtics said if people don’t have to drive, they shouldn’t.
“The roads are in some places snow covered and icy and there is some blowing snow creating poor visibility,” she said.
While Hwy 11 from Nipigon to North Bay has reopened, Hwy 17 from Sistonens Corner to Ignace remains closed.
If people do have to travel, the OPP are encouraging drivers to take extra time to make the trip, drive to conditions and carry a survival kit including a fully charged cell phone.
Cold air stormed through the region starting with rain before moving to freezing rain and snow. The normal high for this time of year is 10 C.
“It is starting to move out now we’re seeing the worst of the snow now pushing off to the east of the area but we are expecting another much cooler day Tuesday,” Environment Canada’s Geoff Coulson said.
Tuesday will see an early morning temperature of around -2C before moving to 4 C throughout the day. Rain is expected Wednesday and another bit of rain and snow could hit the region Sunday.
“That’ll be another system we’ll be keeping our eye on,” Coulson said. “It’s a little early to tell.”
No major collisions have been reported.
