THUNDER BAY — The man accused in a fatal hit-and-run incident in the Intercity area has been arrested and is facing numerous charges.
Jonathan Paypompee, 39, of Big Grassy First Nation was arrested late Tuesday afternoon by the Thunder Bay Police Service.
Paypompee has been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death, one count of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, one count of failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing death, one count of failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm, and one count of driving while prohibited.
Paypompee appeared via video in a Thunder Bay courtroom and was remanded into custody with a new court date scheduled for next week.
The charges relate to an incident Monday afternoon on Simpson Street near Northern Avenue. Emergency crews responded to reports of a collision involving pedestrians at approximately 3:30 p.m.
A 38-year-old female and 42-year-old male were found on the scene with life-threatening injuries. The man died in hospital on Tuesday and the woman remains in critical condition.
The identity of the male victim has not yet been released.
The Thunder Bay Police Service said on Tuesday that the driver was observed sitting in the involved vehicle after the collision before exiting and walking toward the Intercity Shopping Centre.
Video surveillance footage was shared with the public in the hopes of identifying the driver, with police pleading with the suspect to turn himself in.
Information provided by the public led investigators to positively identify Paypompee as the driver the vehicle and he was located and arrested without incident.
Paypompee also had existing warrants for his arrest on other matters.
