THUNDER BAY — One person is dead, and another has life-altering injuries, after being struck from behind while on the sidewalk along Simpson Street.
Emergency services arrived at the scene around 3:30 p.m. on Monday and performed life-saving measures on a 38-year-old woman and a 42-year-old man. The man died as a result of his injuries, police confirmed in a Tuesday morning update.
Police said the female victim has life-altering injuries, and likely a long road of recovery ahead.
Thunder Bay police are appealing to the driver to turn himself in after he was seen on video walking away from the scene of the collision.
"We watched you sit in your vehicle for a few minutes. We watched you exit that vehicle, take a look around," Insp. Ryan Gibson said. "We then watched you walk away towards the mall and into the mall. We have all this on video."
Gibson said the suspect kept making one bad decision after another.
"You then left the scene and did not stay and take responsibility for what happened. You've had time now to think about what's happened and what you're responsible for," he said. "Now get in front of this because it's not going away. Contact your lawyer and turn yourself into the Thunder Bay police station as soon as possible."
Investigators would not elaborate on details about the ownership of the vehicle — a red Dodge Journey — that police now have in their possession, but they are looking to speak to more witnesses for more information on the incident.
The suspect is shown entering the mall in video footage after deliberately walking away from the scene of an accident.
Police have not provided further information about the suspect or his possible location, stating that the investigation is ongoing.
