Police have confirmed one report of someone looting a flooded house on Wednesday.
Thunder Bay Police Service received the report on May 29 sometime in the evening about a break and enter of a home after it was flooded. Many families have had to leave their homes in the East End and other areas of the city following a massive flooding after the Atlantic Avenue sewage treatment plant malfunctioned earlier this week.
City police Const. Julie Tilbury said once they heard about the flooding they knew looting could be a possibility but a single report shouldn’t be a cause for alarm.
She said Break and Enters have gone down since the flooding happened.
“We only have one report that can be directly linked to this unique flood situation,” Tilbury said.
“Will more come in? We don’t know. We were aware of the risk of this possibility. Ever since this situation has occurred we have directed patrols in the area in the East End to look out for this.”
Tilbury said people should be on guard for looters.
