A Victor Street homeowner got a bit of a scare on Thursday night, uncovering an undetonated grenade in his backyard.

The OPP bomb disposal unit, together with the officials from the Department of National Defence, removed the device on Friday afternoon, carrying it away in a shielded bucket for detonation at an unnamed site on Mission Island.

"It is a hand grenade," said OPP Const. Al MacDonald, unable to suggest how long the device might have been on the homeowner’s property. "We will detonate it (at Mission Island). The exact condition of it, we don’t know yet."

A picture supplied by Thunder Bay Police shows a very rusted grenade, though it’s difficult to tell whether the pin is still in it or whether or not it still poses a danger.

MacDonald said although discoveries like this one occur from time to time, they’re still unusual. He cautioned the public to be aware of the dangers of handling a device like this should they come across one, and to contact police immediately.

The homeowner said he preferred not to talk about the incident when asked.
