Thunder Bay residents will be able to say their final farewells at a memorial service for NDP leader Jack Layton on Thursday.
A vigil will take place in honour of Layton, who lost his battle with cancer Monday morning, at Hillcrest Park at 6 p.m.
MP John Rafferty (NDP, Thunder Bay – Rainy River) said the memorial service will give people, who aren’t able to travel to Toronto Saturday for the funeral, a chance to say their farewells.
“This memorial service is prompted by all kinds of many constituents who called and asked if we were doing something,” Rafferty said on Tuesday. “It’s going to be a very simple ceremony. This will be an opportunity for people to express their thoughts and views. I would say literally thousands have done so to me.”
Rafferty said people could bring cards and letters to send to Layton’s family.
The book of condolences will also be available for signing at the ceremony as well as at city hall until Friday when it will then be forwarded to Layton’s family.
Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony.
