Hornepayne sawmill gets new owner

A small northeastern town hit hard by the forestry sector’s downturn received some welcomed news recently – the local sawmill has a new owner. But what that means for the town's future is still unclear.

The small town of Hornepayne got some welcome news over the weekend.

The local sawmill, which was shut down last year, now has a new owner.

Haavuldsrud Timber employed about 150 people before it was closed indefinitely in November of 2015.

The new owners are a consortium led by the CEO of White River Forest Products.

Frank Dottori says the sawmill in Hornepayne needs capital upgrades, so they plan to spend the next two months evaluating the plant and its equipment.

He's hoping to get one shift back to work in January, and the second shift returning by April.

Dottori previously re-started the White River mill in 2013, and he thinks there was ways for the two sawmills to complement each other and work together.

But the plan all depends on the next Canada-U.S. softwood lumber agreement.

Dottori says any return to major tariffs could jeopardize the mills in White River and Hornepayne, along with the rest of Northern Ontario.
