Thunder Bay’s regional hospital has declared a new COVID-19 outbreak for the second time in as many days.

An outbreak was declared Thursday in the 2A Unit, the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre reported.

Three other areas are currently in outbreak, including the 3A Unit (declared Jan. 4), Adult Mental Health Unit (declared Jan. 9), and the Transitional Care Unit-Cedar (declared Jan. 19)

Provincial guidelines require an outbreak to be declared when there are two or more confirmed cases within 14 days in the same area, and both cases could reasonably have been acquired in hospital.

There were 26 people in hospital with COVID-19 on Thursday, an increase of three from the day before. Eight of those patients were being treated in ICU, up two from the previous day.

Ten of those hospitalized are residents of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, according to health unit data, with the remainder coming from further afield in Northwestern Ontario.

The hospital’s medical/surgical occupancy stood at roughly 100.8 per cent, and ICU occupancy was at 86.4 per cent Thursday.

The TBDHU reported 78 new confirmed cases Thursday, and a slight decrease in hospitalizations among district residents.
