A planned five-storey Marriot Hotel that's to be built in Thunder Bay's Intercity area may be in jeopardy.

The Markham-based Easton's Group of Hotels is  looking to construct the 142-room facility as well as two restaurants on property adjacent to the Superstore, next to the Harbour Expressway.  But an Ontario Municipal Board appeal may stop the development in its tracks.

The appeal has been launched by the landowner, Loblaw Properties West.  City council earlier this year passed bylaw amendments to allow the project to move forward and ground was expected to be broken this spring on the three-star hotel.  A retail store and two restaurants were slated for construction this summer.

The deal is now in the hands of lawyers says a city planner, who believes the project is no longer going to happen.

An email request for an interview made to Loblaw headquarters was not immediately returned on Monday afternoon.
