The Thunder Bay area saw a big drop in housing starts during the month of August.

According to Canada Mortgage and Housing, 16 new single-detached homes started construction last month, compared to 34 in July and 35 in August of last year.

But there were also 10 new multi-unit homes started, bringing the overall total for the month up to 26 starts.

For the year-to-date, there have been 115 single-detached homes that began construction. That's a 15-percent drop compared to numbers recorded in 2010.

But there have been 44 multi-unit starts in 2011, which is nearly four times as many as last year.

CMHC market analyst Warren Philp said the upcoming fall months should be busy, since there were 171 building permits taken out in June.
