THUNDER BAY – The local humane society will be turning back the clock to help raise funds for a new spay and neuter clinic.

The Thunder Bay and District Humane Society will be hosting a Back to the 80s ‘Pawty’ Night on Sept. 11 at the Canadian Lakehead Exhibition’s Coliseum building, looking to push closer to the target needed to open the 4,000 square foot facility.

So far, the humane society has been able to raise $40,000 of the $200,000 goal that is required to break ground on what would be the only spay and neuter clinic from between the Manitoba border and North Bay.

“We see the pet overpopulation in Thunder Bay and in the district is extreme like nowhere else in Ontario,” said humane society executive director Melanie Blanchette at a Wednesday afternoon media conference to announce the event.

“It would prevent unplanned and unwanted litters and provide affordable vet services for everybody within the Thunder Bay area and district.”

There are 1,000 tickets available for the fundraiser, which will include blasts from the past such as distinctive 80s music, clothing and dancing.

Cindy Commisso, who serves on the humane society’s board of directors, said the night will feature an ultimate lip sync battle.

“People can challenge others, for a donation, to lip sync. The individual can actually get out of it by matching that donation. It’s going to be a great battle and we can’t wait to have it,” she said.

There will also be retro video games and a best dressed 80s costume contest.

The event will run from 8 p.m. until 11 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance or $10 at the door and are available at the humane society, Firedog Communications or Breakwater Taphouse.
