A  Georgian Bluffs man has been fined $2,000 for a hunting offence.

Scott Morgan pleaded guilty and was fined $2,000 for discharging a firearm down a public road. He is not allowed to hunt in Ontario for one year and must successfully complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course before hunting in the province again.

Court heard that on October 20, 2013, a conservation officer responded to a complaint along One Island Road, a maintained and well-travelled forest resource access road off Snake Falls Road, south of Red Lake.

The officer contacted Morgan as he was leaving the area with his hunting party. Upon investigation, the officer determined that Morgan, while hunting along One Island Road earlier that day, saw a cow moose about 180 to 230 metres further down the road. He exited a vehicle, knelt down and shot four times down the road at the moose. Morgan shot across a vehicle entrance to a gravel pit where other hunters were camping. He also shot in the direction of a corner where he could not see oncoming traffic. The moose was seized and forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Danalyn MacKinnon heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Red Lake, on April 22, 2015.

It is illegal to shoot from, down or across a public road when hunting.
