Hydro disconnection notices banned during stay-at-home order

Residential customers who are in arrears can't be cut off before May 21.

TORONTO — The Ontario Energy Board says residential customers whose accounts are in arrears may not be issued disconnection notices during the province's current stay-at-home order.

The OEB's annual winter disconnection prohibition would normally expire on April 30.

Electricity distributors are usually permitted to issue disconnection notices to delinquent customers as early as 14 days before the end of the prohibition.

However, due to the stay-at-home measures which were imposed on April 8 for a period of 28 days, the OEB announced Tuesday that it is banning companies from giving notice before May 6.

This effectively means that no customer can be disconnected for non-payment before May 21.

The OEB said this gives customers more time to contact their supplier to arrange a payment plan, or to investigate whether they are eligible for one of the available support programs.
