Green Party MP Bruce Hyer says he's managed to push through legislation to create the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area.
The Harper Conservatives introduced Bill C-61 on June 2, nearly a decade after first announcing the new national park. But the bill was destined to die on the floor, due to Parliament dissolving until after the October election.
The National Marine Conservation area would protect roughly 10,000-square kilometres of freshwater and associated shoreline between the Sleeping Giant and Terrace Bay.
One way to speed up the process of making the bill become law is to obtain unanimous consent from the House. Hyer forced a vote on the issue on Wednesday evening, and members of the other parties agreed to it.
Hyer says he's now working to get the Liberal and Conservative Senators on board before the senate breaks for the summer.
