THUNDER BAY -- The Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area has crossed its final hurdle in Ottawa.

MP Bruce Hyer says he lobbied the Senate to give royal assent to Bill-61 this week, and it's now one of the largest freshwater marine protected areas in the world.

More than 10,000 square kilometres of the lake are now under the bill's protection.

The Conservation Area also includes the lake bed, islands and shoreland.

Hyer also says its creation will contribute to the area's economy by enhancing tourism and creating jobs.

He adds that when the vote went before the Senate this week, he was very nervous, but the unanimous support which he received from all sides has him even more pleased with the outcome.

The conservation area will stretch from Sibley Peninsula to Terrace Bay.

Federal Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford says the establishment of the National Marine Conservation Area clearly demonstrates his Government's commitment to environmental protection.
