Hymers wraps up centennial with a big splash

John Mazur breathed a sigh of relief when he took home the most cash at this year’s Money Pool.

The annual event held at the Hymers Fall Fair had five participants search for $2,000 in cash at the bottom of an inflatable pool.  Mazur thrashed about trying to collect as much cash as he could grab. Between each breath, he passed off the money to his finance Daphne Agar.

Soaked and out of breath, Mazur claimed the most cash. He participated last year and grabbed nearly $200 and he said that experience helped him out for his second try.

“It was nice and refreshing and I got lots of money,” Mazur said. “I ran out of breath there. My strategy was to sweep the money together in a pile and grab handfuls. I had a method there that I was pushing money to the side so I could sweep at the bottom of the pool and when I went to the side I could pick up all the money.”

Thousands attended this year’s fair in order to celebrate the 100th anniversary.

Sandra Mazur, past-president of the Hymers Fair, said attendance went up by 25 per cent from last year because of the fair’s centennial.

“I think the agricultural portion of the fall fair is a big drawing card,” Mazur said.

“It always has been. People always come out to see the shows. This year we have the heavy horse show back so people have been coming just for that.  This year is going to be hard to beat but I hope people come out next year. A lot of people are coming out for the first time this year.”
