If temperatures hold, Loch Lomond Ski Area could open by weekend

While some residents are cursing at recent cold temperatures, a local ski hill was celebrating -- making enough snow to be open as early as this weekend.

Armed with nearly 20 snow guns Loch Lomond Ski Area took advantage of three recent cold nights to build nearly a foot of snow as a base on the lower part of its South slope.

Owner Ward Bond said if the rain stays away, the run will be open Saturday.

"It could be open right now," he said.

Bond said he'll make the call Friday whether the man-made snow should be groomed to be ready for the expected 1,000 skiers and snowboarders waiting for the season to start.

"The phone rings off the hook this time of year," Bond said."It's so weird because last year in April we had so much snow even May and we had all our runs open but we didn't' have any people. Now if we have one little run open we'll have a thousand people out here it's incredible."

The Snoopy lift would be open to let people onto the lower Sunbowl run if the hill does open this weekend.

In the meantime Bond said they're busy blasting snow onto the entire South side of Loch Lomond to get it ready.
