A suspected impaired driver attempted to ditch his van after crashing into a home on the city’s southside Sunday morning.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials say officers responded to a single-vehicle crash at about 8 a.m. Sunday at a home on East Arthur Street, near Kelly Street.

When officers arrived they found a silver Dodge Grand Caravan had skid off the roadway and into the front steps of a home.

Police say the driver attempted to flee the scene with his vehicle, but when that didn’t work he instead ditched the van and fled on foot. Witnesses were able to provide a description of the suspect, and officers found the man a short distance away.

A 44-year-old Thunder Bay man has been charged with impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.
