THUNDER BAY -- A 39-year-old woman is facing impaired driving charges after fleeing from a RIDE program late Wednesday evening.

According to an Ontario Provincial Police release, officers were conducting a RIDE program on the Balsam off ramp off of Highway 11/17 around 10 p.m.

A 39-year-old driver stopped at the checkpoint and police determined the driver had been drinking.

Police requested the driver pull over to conduct a roadside test to check the driver's sobriety.

The driver pulled over and then fled the RIDE location and proceeded eastbound on Highway 11/17 at a high rate of speed.

Police patrolled the area and came across the suspect driver and attempted a traffic stop. After a brief pursuit, the driver entered a driveway a few hundred metres away where the driver was taken into custody.

Following a police investigation, the driver was charged with flight from police and operation while impaired over 80.

The driver is scheduled to appear in court on May 3.
