Incoming LUSU president calls judicial review delays a victory

Lakehead University’s Student Union says the school’s decision to review its conflict-of-interest bylaws will put an end to a planned application for a judicial review into the matter – for now.

Lakehead University’s Student Union says the school’s decision to review its conflict-of-interest bylaws will put an end to a planned application for a judicial review into the matter – for now.

Calling it a major victory for students, new LUSU president Emma Brightwell on Tuesday said the judicial review will be delayed until after the university completes its internal review of its practices.

Late last week LUSU officials threatened to take the matter to court, when the school’s board of governors said it would use the conflict-of-interest legislation to deny student governors the right to speak or vote on tuition matters.

“The reinstatement of students’ rights to vote on tuition fee increases is an important step to an appropriate change to the conflict-of-interest bylaw,” Brightwell said in a release.

The student union still plans to fight to have the Lakehead University Act 1965 reopened.
