THUNDER BAY — The recent downward trend in indicators for the prevalence of COVID-19 continues.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit on Wednesday reported only 19 new positive test results.

The active case count across the district fell to 182 from 208 on Tuesday.

TBDHU also reported 32 patients in hospital with COVID-19, two fewer than the day before.

The number of patients in ICU held steady at just one.

Another positive sign is a decline in the COVID-19 positivity test rate in the district.

For the week of May 15 to 21, it was 13.8 per cent, a drop of nearly four per cent from the previous week.

Public health authorities continue to caution that the actual number of active cases is likely much higher, since PCR testing is limited to vulnerable groups only, and because the results of rapid antigen tests are not included in the calculation.

Across Ontario, 1,082 people were registered in hospital with COVID-19 on Wednesday, including 160 in intensive care.

This was an increase of 192 reported hospitalizations since Tuesday.

A week ago, however, there were 1,248 hospitalizations in the province, with 163 in intensive care.
