THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s city council awarded nearly $4 million of road, sewer, and water infrastructure work on Monday, with streets including Vickers up for improvements over the summer.
A contract for rehabilitation of roads, watermains, and sanitary sewers on three south end streets accounts for the bulk of that expense.
Council voted unanimously to award the tender for the work on Leland, Heron, and Vickers streets to Makkinga Contracting and Equipment Rentals, which submitted the lowest tender at $3,049,573.94, including HST.
The local company has completed numerous similar projects for the City in the past.
With four tenders submitted, Makkinga’s bid beat its closest competitor by nearly $150,000 – though it exceeded the city’s pre-tender estimate of $2,996,000.
The contract includes road and watermain replacement on Leland Street between Walsh and Arthur; watermain replacement, storm sewer work, new sidewalk, and road resurfacing on Heron Street between Prince Arthur Boulevard and Mackenzie Street; and watermain replacement on Vickers Street between Cameron and Cumming.
The work is expected to start in May 2021 and continue until scheduled completion at the end of October 2021.
A second contract for repaving of a number of streets was also awarded to Bruno’s Contracting. Its tender of $781,159.40 beat its nearest competitor by around $40,000, and came in nearly $90,000 below the City’s pre-tender estimate.
The work will see around 42,200 square metres of pavement on Frederica Street, John Street Road, and Oliver Road resurfaced using hot in-place asphalt.
With an HST rebate, the final cost to the City for the contract is pegged at $723,458.23.
