The Thunder Bay and District Injured Worker Support Group is taking a stand against lost compensation benefits.
Friday afternoon, a number of members gathered outside MPP Michael Gravelle's (Lib., Thunder Bay-Superior North) office in protest of losses. This comes after the provincial government passed bill 135 containing amendments to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
Injured workers are calling on the provincial government to do four things to help compensation. Bring in full inflation protection for WSIB benefits, provide benefits for actual wage lost because of disability, the elimination of experience rating and coverage for all workers in Ontario. Members of the Thunder Bay and District Injured Workers support group walked the sidewalks outside Gravelle's office to protest changes to the Workplace and Safety Insurance Act. Support Group spokesperson Steve Mantis said injured workers are tired of not having their voices heard.
Mantis said around 375,000 people in Ontario have suffered from a workplace injury or disease and that more than half of those will become chronically unemployed.
