UPDATE: Inmate escapes custody near Nipigon

OPP are assisting Anishnabek Police Service in apprehending an inmate who escaped custody east of Nipigon.

NIPIGON, Ont. - Anishnabek Police and Ontario Provincial Police are advising the public to be on the lookout for an escaped inmate east of Nipigon.

According to an OPP media release, Anishnabek Police Service officers were transporting 36-year-old Lindsay Legarde to the Thunder Bay District Jail Wednesday afternoon.

At approximately 1:45 p.m. Legarde escaped custody west of Gravel River at the Little Cypress Bridge snow plow turnaround.

Legarde is described as an Indigenous male, approximately 5-foot-9 and weighing 175 pounds with short dark hair and a goatee. Police said he has a scar on his nose and was last seen wearing a grey T-shirt and blue jeans.

Legarde is facing mischief and break of undertaking recognizance charges and was being transported to Thunder Bay to face additional charges. Officials with Anishnabek Police Service say there is no risk to the public.

Police are advising drivers in the area not to pick up male hitchhikers. Anyone with information on Legarde's whereabouts is asked to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
