Inmates igniting fires in cell area cause of Saturday blaze at district jail

A spokesperson with the Ministry of the Solicitor General said no injuries were reported.

THUNDER BAY - The cause of multiple small fires that were quickly extinguished at the Thunder Bay District Jail this past weekend was the result of two inmates, the ministry said Monday.

On Aug. 15, jail staff quickly extinguished small fires in a cell area at about 6:30 p.m. at the district jail. According to Thunder Bay Fire Rescue light smoke was still present when they arrived on the scene and firefighters helped clear the smoke from the building.

A spokesperson with the Ministry of the Solicitor General said no injuries were reported and the incident was the result of two inmates igniting small fires in their cell area.
