THUNDER BAY - More than six years after he died in Thunder Bay hospital, a coroner's inquest began on Monday into the death of an 18-year-old man.

Cody Thompson-Hardy, from Rocky Bay First Nation, had been in custody at the Thunder Bay District Jail before being transferred to hospital eight days prior to his death on August 19, 2011.

After testimony began, the coroner's jury heard a fellow inmate, Tyler Freund, detail the drug use that he and his friend Thompson-Hardy engaged in the days before he was taken to hospital.

Freund said jail staff had noticed Thompson-Hardy acting "a bit off," but did not take any action to send him to the segregation unit.

He also testified that on the morning of August 11, 2011, a fellow inmate woke him up to check on Thompson-Hardy, and that the man was unresponsive. Freund said there was evidence of blood on his pillow.

Thompson-Hardy was subsequently rushed to hospital.

The inquest is expected to last up to five days, and is scheduled to hear from about 20 witnesses.
