THUNDER BAY — A coroner's jury has completed an inquest into the workplace death of a Thunder Bay man without making any recommendations.
Gabriel McKay, 36, died in hospital on Nov. 6., 2017 from injuries sustained at a construction site the previous year.
He took a fall while installing drywall.
At the inquest on Monday, his former employer and a co-worker who was present when the accident happened both praised McKay's professionalism and work ethic.
There were concerns that he was not wearing a hardhat at the time he fell, but it was agreed that workers installing drywall often need to remove their hardhats to be able to manoeuvre in tight spots.
It was also stressed that they are not designed to protect a person's head in a fall.
All parties at the inquest agreed that this was an unfortunate "textbook accident," so no recommendations were made to prevent similar mishaps in the future.
McKay is survived by his wife and five children.
